I know it is last minute, but you never know, someone may see this before tomorrow and come to my aid. I've been working furiously producing wearable art that I want to sell at Last Thursday. However I just realized, as I am trying to get everything ready for tomorrow, that I don't have any idea what the protocol is for vendor set up. How early should I get there? Do people have "spots" that they return to every month that they will get mad at me for un-knowingly stealing? Do I need to go in earlier and ask the owner of whatever shop or bar I want to set up outside of for permission? I can't believe I didn't think to find all this out before, but I've been having so much fun sewing that I just realized that the day is TOMORROW and I have no idea what to do once I get there! If anyone sees this and has any pointers I'd love to hear from you. If not I'm sure I'll figure it out tomorrow. Thanks for reading. Happy summer and have a great Last Thursday!

Mister Creature hung it up to dry behind the double decker bus on Alberta and 18th after his act, and it disappeared. Please pleaase please give it back! It is a vital part of our show, and as I don't have any more of that fabric and can't find it again, I'll have to make a whole new bear suit at the cost of about $75 bucks in materials. I don't really want to have to do this just because of someone's sticky fingers, so please pretty please help bring my bear back home!

Anyhow, this person, and probably others, will be at the city neighborhood meeting this Monday, September 29 at 6:30 at the NE Police Precinct, 449 NE Emerson. We need a strong showing of people that support this community event to offset the few "concerned citizens."

Are you a busker (street performer)?
This is how it works:
We will start at 6:00 and have a sign-up and we'll announce you, take the stage and you have a maximum 20 minutes of performance time then you can pass the hat if you would like. Then the next performer takes the stage and so on.

We have just built an aerial rig for trapeze, silk, and hoop if you let us know beforehand.

Rose City Vaudeville will also be scouting for new talent for upcoming shows. (FYI-our unifying theme is turn-of-the-century costuming and ol' time music with a modern flair. You know, bustles and top hats.)

I just want to say that I am a lover of dogs and don't have issues with dogs. I do have some issue with some of their owners however. Last Thursday is not the best atmosphere for most dogs to be in. There are hundreds of people milling around, it's loud, it's chaotic, there's fire spinning around. Unless your dog is extremely socialized to large crowds or perhaps a circus performer then maybe it would be best to leave him/her home for this night. Your dog would probably be happier.

I have known many people who humanize their pets. Dogs aren't humans they are dogs. they follow dog codes of behavior. If you do not understand this you should not own a dog. You especially should not own a pitbull. ( I do not hate pitbulls, my x owned a pitbull which I lived with for 10 years until he died, the dog that is. I loved the dog but he was not a dog that was safe to take out in public. He was extremely aggressive to other animals, which is how pitbulls are specifically bred to be.)

Last night, not for the first time, I found myself in the middle of a dogfight on Alberta. The participating dogs were both pitbulls. One was on a leash and the other who was not on a leash jumped on him. The owner of the unleashed dog pulled his dog off the other and kept his dog on a leash for 5 maybe 10 minutes. Then he had a talk with his "little buddy" and told him that that other dog did not want to play and proceeded to unleash his pet. Many people asked him to leash his dog and he did not because he felt his dog was not a problem and was happier offleash. The same dog tried to go into my friends house up the street. She is afraid of dogs and I shoed the dog out of her house. The owner was nowhere in sight.

Sorry for my rant, but I'm sick of it.

My dog doesn't bite, he's vegan.

Dummy up, you hippy fuck, you own a dangerous animal. Treat him as such.

I am new to PDX and I am wanting to sell some stuff at Last Thursday. Looking for info on how to get a spot. I read on their website that you go and talk to a business earlier in the day and then set up. I am wondering if most peeps already have their spots staked out or if in fact it is a first come first serve kind of deal. I know down on the boardwalk in Venice people could get pretty territorial and I don't want to upset the mix but I do want to share my creations with others. Any advice would be great and anyone who might be wiling to meet up and set up together that has experience down on Alberta and knows some good spots that would be awesome! I am selling some sexy funky clothes, colorful children's clothes and I will be enticing people with vegan chocolate coconut macaroons!
Thanks for your help!
Just wanted to invite you to Last Thursday on Alberta.
Rose City Vaudeville is now hosting a busker's block on 19th and Alberta. We have closed off our block to traffic and we'll be pulling out our double decker bus and hosting performance artists for the next three Last Thursdays.
How it works:
We will start at 6:00 and have a sign-up chalkboard so sign in and we'll announce you, take the stage and you have up to 20 minutes of performance time then you can pass the hat if you would like. Then the next performer takes the stage and so on.
The Accadian Ballroom will be joining in the fun serving food and drink on the street as well. Next month they are wanting to have a beer garden as we entertain the masses.
Rose City Vaudeville will also be scouting for new talent for upcoming shows. (FYI-our unifying theme is turn-of-the-century costuming and ol' time music with a modern flair. You know, bustles and top hats.)
We are building a portable aerial rig but it will not be ready for Thursday but we should have it done next month.

So please come on over this coming Thursday, 19th Ave and Alberta. Introduce yourself, sign up and come play! Please let your other performing friends know to join us at the busker's block!

We are planning for a closure of Alberta Street for Last Thursday between April and October, starting this year.

A recent survey was publicized in the Oregonian last week

www.oregonlive.com/oregonian/stories/index.ssf?/base/portland_news/1202169313296960.xml&coll=7#continue

The result of the survey shows that 80% of the neighbors and merchants are in favor of closing down the street for the event. Frankly I am surprised that the percentage is as high as it is. The members of the group surveyed are the people that will be the most inconvenienced by the closure. Was the same question to be asked to the people attending the event, the vendors and the performers it is my belief that the result would be 90-95% in favor of the street closure. The people have spoken. It is now the obligation of the City to fulfill the wish of the people.

I met with the Mayor’s office yesterday. Their position to date has been to not support the street closure. Based on the current situation they have agreed to reconsider their position. I hope to hear from them by the end of the month. The two people with the power to cause the street closure are the Mayor and Sam Adams who is the commissioner of Bureau of Transportation and in many peoples opinion the most likely next Mayor of Portland. I have requested a meeting with his office and will report the results of that meeting to this group.

The survey motioned above was commissioned by Art on Alberta. Their annual meeting takes place tomorrow, Wednesday Feb. 13th, 6:30pm at Zaytoons. Sam Adams is scheduled to speak at the meeting. I am encouraging anyone that is interested in closing the street to attend.

Below is a copy of my “platform”. I posted it a few weeks ago on this site. If you read it then you might choose not to read it again.

Take care,

Magnus Johannesson

Platform:

As the founder of Last Thursday, it has been my joy to watch the event turn into something more wonderful than I’d ever hoped it could be. The monthly event is a star on Portland’s cultural calendar. Though the event came from my idea, I never intended to make it mine – merely to be a source of support. Now, after 10 years away from my influence, there is a need for me to step in and help Last Thursday make a transition before going off on its own again.
Before we get into the reasons behind that transition and where it might lead, let’s go ahead and agree on a few things:
•	Last Thursday is an amazing event that makes Portland a great place to live.
•	Last Thursday’s appeal is the vibrant culture that exists around it, not any one gallery, restaurant, vendor or performance.
•	Last Thursday has grown and thrived for 10 years without any regulation or outside intervention.

Keeping these positive and encouraging truths in mind, we must acknowledge a fourth fact: Last Thursday needs to change.
The event has become unsustainable in its current state due solely to its popularity – which is a good problem to have. The best estimates show 10,000 people attending the event over the summer months. This has created three primary conflicts:
1.	Pedestrians and automobile traffic. Too many people now attend the monthly event to walk freely on sidewalks where vendors have set up. As a result, they spill on to the road where automobile traffic is already clogged due to the increased activity. The situation is at best inconvenient and at worst unsafe.
2.	Lack of basic utilities. As with any public event that draws a crowd, Last Thursday needs to provide adequate bathrooms, trashcans and crowd monitoring. Art on Alberta and members of the Vernon Neighborhood association have made steps to address these issues, but there is still work to be done.
3.	Discordance among stakeholders. There are many stakeholders in Last Thursday: residents, business owners, city agencies, vendors and attendees. Even among these groups, there are varying ideas of what Last Thursday should be. Currently, there is not a forum for all stakeholders to have an equal voice in shaping the event.

To address these issues and any others that may arise, I have formed a nonprofit organization under the name “Last Thursday.” This organization will be a point of contact for stakeholders, provide event services and advocate for the event independent of any one group. 2008 is a pivotal year for Last Thursday. The event has a life of its own and until now it has been allowed to become what it wants to be. This year will decide if that evolution will continue organically, or if Last Thursday will be directed to grow according to artificial interests.
It is my firm belief that any attempt to restrict or direct Last Thursday according to artificial interests will effectively kill the event. First Thursday began with an air of spontaneity and edginess, but as it became more regulated it turned into something rather ho-hum. The event still draws a crowd, but the energy it once had ¬– the energy I am trying to preserve for Last Thursday – is gone.
To start working toward a solution, I am outlining the 2008 goals for Last Thursday to specifically address the three issues stated above.
1.	Close the street. The organic solution demands Alberta Street be closed to automobile traffic during Last Thursday. Drivers who realize the event is taking place avoid the street. TriMet re-routed buses to Killingsworth in 2007, only resuming the Alberta Street route after mandated by the City in a poor attempt to manage the crowd. Closing the street would allow attendees to move more freely, reducing social conflicts. Vendors could free up the sidewalk by setting up in the unused parking spaces on the road. The street would close from 15th to 30th between the hours of 6pm and 10pm.
2.	Provide necessary services. We are willing to fund efforts to provide monitoring, restrooms and waste disposal through the Last Thursday nonprofit, with the goal of creating a sustainable, community-based solution. It is my belief that all businesses should contribute by making their restrooms available to the public and placing a trash bin outside their door. Crowd monitoring is already being provided by volunteers from the Vernon Neighborhood Association and they are doing an incredible job. The Last Thursday nonprofit will be a focal point to pool together an even larger force of volunteers to monitor the event. City Police have been a part of monitoring Last Thursday since May of 2007. It is my goal in 2008 for a volunteer community force to phase out the need for any police presence at Last Thursday.
3.	Create a forum for discussion and governance. Last Thursday needs rules and it needs funding. I propose that both come organically from the community. The Last Thursday nonprofit will be a place where all stakeholders can offer support or address concerns while working toward individual solutions. Imposing overarching rules on Last Thursday is an artificial solution, and one that ultimately satisfies very few. I believe that people will offer to fund aspects of Last Thursday they wish to continue and advocate for change as they see fit. It is already happening, but without truly open access. Providing stakeholders with an open forum to shape the ideas that will govern Last Thursday’s growth is the only organic solution.

These are just a few specific solutions to real issues facing Last Thursday. If they are not the right solutions, then the people will have a place to say so. Other issues will arise and solutions will be found. The idea of “preserving” Last Thursday is a misconception. The event is alive, and as such it must grow and change. But it is now that we must all agree to let Last Thursday change according to its own will.

As you are probably aware, that survey showed that the overwhelming majority of residents are FOR closing down parts of Alberta to vehicle traffic during Last Thursday. The city powers seem to care less about what residents want. This is your chance to be heard!

I’ve been involved with Alberta Street since the early 90’s and have had my finger in most of the stuff that has happened there since. I founded Last Thursday and have seen it threatened to be taken over by “special interests” over the past couple of years. I am dedicating this year to help set it up as its own entity to make sure that it stays grass roots.

Below is my “platform”. Comments are sought and encouraged. Criticism is welcomed, but preferably constructive. I am and will be seeking strategic allies. Maybe you want to get involved?

Senate bill 1959
The end of Free Speech in America has arrived at our doorstep. It's a new law called the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act, and it is worded in a clever way that could allow the U.S. government to arrest and incarcerate any individual who speaks out against the Bush Administration, the war on Iraq, the Department of Homeland Security or any government agency (including the FDA). The law has already passed the House on a traitorous vote of 405 to 6, and it is now being considered in the Senate where a vote is imminent. All over the internet, intelligent people who care about freedom are speaking out against this extremely dangerous law: Philip Giraldi at the Huffington Post, Declan McCullagh at CNET's News.com, Kathryn Smith at OpEdNews.com, and of course Alex Jones at PrisonPlanet.com

This bill is the beginning of the end of Free Speech in America. If it passes, all the information sources you know and trust could be shut down and their authors imprisoned. NewsTarget could be taken offline and I could be arrested as a "terrorist." Jeff Rense at www.Rense.com could be labeled a "terrorist" and arrested. Byron Richards, Len Horowitz, Paul Craig Roberts, Greg Palast, Ron Paul and even Al Gore could all be arrested, silenced and incarcerated. This is not an exaggeration. It is a literal reading of the law, which you can check yourself here: thomas.loc.gov/home/gpoxm...955_rfs.xml

The bill states:

‘...ideologically based violence’ means the use, planned use, or threatened use of force or violence by a group or individual to promote the group or individual’s political, religious, or social beliefs...

Note that this means the "planned use of force to promote a political or social belief" would be considered an act of terrorism. This all hinges on the definition of "force," of course. Based on the loose use of logic in Washington these days, and the slippery interpretation of the meaning of words, "force" could mean:

• A grassroots campaign to barrage Congress with faxes
• A non-violent street protest
• A letter-writing campaign that deluges the Senate with too much mail
• A sit-in protest that blocks access to a business or organization
• A grassroots e-mail campaign that overloads the e-mail servers of any government department or agency

You get the idea. "Force" could be defined as practically anything. And since the "planned use of force" would be considered a criminal act of terrorism, anyone who simply thinks about a grassroots action campaign would be engaged in terrorist acts.

If you stopped someone on the street and handed them a Bible, for example, this could be considered an act of terrorism ("...use of force to promote the individual's religious beliefs...")

If you sent a barrage of angry letters to Washington about global warming and the destruction of the environment by the U.S. military, this could also be considered an act of terrorism ("...to promote the individual's political beliefs...")

If you believe in same-sex marriage and you wrote a letter threatning a sit-in protest in front of your state's capitol building, this could also be considered an act of terrorism, even if you never carried it out! ("...planned use of force to promote a social belief...")

The United States is on the fast track to fascism, and the Congress is working right alongside this nation's traitorous leaders to criminalize any thoughts, words or speeches that disagree with current government policies regarding war, terrorism, domestic surveillance and civil liberties. Simply speaking out against the war on Iraq could soon be labeled a crime. Merely thinking thoughts against the war on Iraq could be considered a criminal act.

Must-see video: Naomi Wolf's lecture on 10 steps to fascism
There's a video lecture you simply MUST watch. It's by Naomi Wolf, author of The End of America. She covers this topic with great elegance and a deep understanding of history. See her video on YouTube at: www.youtube.com/watch

We're hoping to set up our "first ever" Last Thursday craft booth (emphasis on "craft" not booth"), using our VW bus as backdrop and tarping the heck out of it for rain shelter.

Got some Questions:

1. Is there a "placement hierarchy" among the Last Thursday vendors? My understanding is that this is a total "squatters" market, yet we really don't want to step on any old-timer's toes, so to speak.

2. How do peeps gain access to electricity? We'd totally do some rockin' out if we had more amps, but as it is now, we're somewhat limited to the auxiliary battery of the bus.....

Howdy Folks,

Welcome Home to the Oregon gathering in the Ochoco National Forest from September 11, 2007 until September 23, 2007. Seed camp begins September 6, 2007.
For more information, contact:
groups.yahoo.com/group/mountainspirit
or call 240-863-6250 or email mountainspirit@yahoogroups.com.

Where the Ochoco Gathering in Oregon will Be.
The 2007 Rainbow Gathering is in Ochoco National Forest at a place called Indian Prarie in central Oregon. (between Prineville and Mitchell)
From Prineville:
Take hwy 26 east towards Mitchell. Make a right turn onto hwy 23,(this road is not marked, but is the next two lane paved road after the reservoir, a few miles out of town, to the right) which later turns into hwy 22 and continues to Walton Lake. Soon after the lake, turn left onto FS 150, a dirt road. Go a little ways till 150 ends in a T. Go right onto FS 2630, and continue to the parking lot and Bus Village.
From Mitchell:
Take hwy 26 west towards Prineville. A little ways past the Bandit Springs rest area, go left onto FS 2630. This later becomes FS 2210, and 2630 becomes a less maintained road. Follow FS 2210 to hwy 22. Turn left onto hwy 22 and follow past Walton Lake. Soon after the lake, turn left onto FS 150, a dirt road. Go a little ways till 150 ends in a T. Go right onto FS 2630, and continue to the parking lot and Bus Village.
More map details
This is right near the Bridge Creek Wilderness area, and north of the Big Summit Prarie. I can see several springs on the map. Sortof behind the site is the Mt. Pisgah Lookout. It looks to be no more than 6000-6500 feet in altitude.
For general information about the Rainbow Family and regional events, please first look around an unofficial family website- go to Welcome Home at

What is a Rainbow Gathering?
Carla's Gathering Basics
What follows is my take on it. No one put me in charge (thank goodness), so you may get other answers from other folks that add or subtract stuff - but basically I think most folks will be in agreement with what I see as being the basics for a gathering.
It is free and non-commercial. This means no entry fee and no money charged for any service at the event (food, medical, etc.). There are people at gatherings who hang out with the barter circle and essentially have a commercial trip going either with trade or cash, but this is their own personal trip and has nothing to do with the actual set-up of a gathering. I personally consider these folks in violation of the basic spirit of the gathering and wish they would go away, or at least put away their trade goods. But since we have no cops, no courts, and no jails, they continue to do as they please, over the objections of many but also with the support also of many. Anyway, with the exception of these folks who are taking advantage of the free space, you shouldn't find any commercialism at a gathering whatsoever.
Rainbow gatherings are non-aligned both spiritually and politically. There is no one right religious or spiritual belief; people of all faiths are welcome to come gather. Often, people from specific churches or temples come set up their own camp and feed lots of folks from their kitchens (the Krishnas and the Bread of Life Christian camp being the most notable). There are no hassles towards any church group proselytizing or trying to win converts - if people want to listen, that's their own business.
Rainbow also does not support any specific political cause, party, issue, or candidate. Many people come to gatherings to recruit for their own specific Peace Walk, Drums around the Pentagon, environmental action, or whatever; but again, that is their own trip. They certainly have the right of free speech to spread the word about whatever event they are sponsoring. But they do nothave the right to call it a Rainbow event or claim they have support of the Rainbow Family. If they do make such claims, they are ripping off the Family name. Folks involved in such actions have every right to also mention, if asked, that yes, they consider themselves to be Rainbows. No reason not to fly your colors, especially when you're doing something you consider a good cause and are proud of being involved in. You just can't say that your event (protesting logging the rainforest, for example) is a Rainbow protest as such.
We have no leaders. We operate by consensus process. No one is in charge, we have no board of directors. For many regional events, a small circle of people often initiates the event, and the circle grows and becomes many. All the labor of getting the gathering together in a safe and healthy manner is done by volunteers.
The only rule we have is that of peaceful respect. That actually encompasses a lot, when you stop and think about it. Sure, no one can tell anyone else what to do, but if someone builds an unsafe fire under a tree, they will hear about it (hopefully in a sweet way) from many people who are worried about the safety of the camp. We like to say that everyone is Shanti Sena (Peacekeeper). The idea is to communicate in such a way that folks doing something non-peaceful, non-respectful, unhealthy, or unsafe will see the error of their ways and choose to get with the program. When something really out of line occurs (a violent individual hitting someone with a club, for example) a Shanti Sena council (consisting in the ideal of all interested parties, as well as some experienced folks from the Shanti Sena Clan to give guidance and physical safety) forms to deal with the issue. If the victim of the violence wishes to press charges, the incident is dealt with accordinly, and the Shanti Sena folks cooperate in turning the perpetrator over to local law enforcement - a controversial move, to be sure, but in some cases unavoidable and sometimes even desirable. If no one wants to see the local authorities involved but a person is considered a danger to the safety of folks in camp, two options are commonly turned to: someone capable of handling the situation volunteers to accompany the offending person 24 hours a day around camp; or the person must leave the gathering and not come back that year.
As per a standing consensus by the Rainbow Family Tribal Council, we don't apply for or sign permits. With the new group use regulations instituted by the Forest Service this year, this has become a difficult position to hold. One regional gathering signed a permit and gathered under a different name than Rainbow. Weird, and lot of people were angry at the folks who signed the permit, but what are ya gonna do? Take away their hippie cards? Anyway, theoretically,if a gathering has a permit, it is by definition not a Rainbow Gathering.
Also, by long tradition, we do not gather anywhere but public land. Occassionallythere may be focussed councils (Thanksgiving Council, regional councils) that happen on private land, but gatherings themselves are always held on public land. Again, if it happens otherwise, it is by definition not a Rainbow Gathering, though the event may be very rainbow in nature otherwise.
We take responsibility for every aspect of the gathering, from set-up to clean-up. We don't ask for help bulldozing roads, getting donations from local charities or food banks. We are self-sufficient in every aspect of our gathering, and responsible for ourselves. Most important, when the gathering is over, many people stay behind to totally clean up the site. No janitors are paid to clean up after folks. Gatherers are expected to use the recycling center set up on site and to pack out what they packed in. The clean up crew takes out all trash to recycling centers and to landfills, then restores and rehabilitates the site. This may involve scarifying the earth to loosen up compacted areas, filling in ruts caused by vehicles, water-barring hilly areas, and reseeding the ground. All shitters and camps are disappeared and naturalized. This is a lot of work folks! If you've never stayed for cleanup, you've never really done a gathering. This is not a dead lot - this is real, this is a labor of love, and it's one of the only reasons, both karmically and politically, that the powers that be haven't put the ax to us long ago.
A Rainbow Gathering is not a rock concert or a platform for speakers. If cars are allowed in the gathering area proper, and if there is amplified music as a central theme, it most certainly is NOT a Rainbow Gathering (the drive-in gathering in Texas was an exception, as we were not allowed to close the road).
If it were up to me to define it, I would say this is the most important aspect of the Gathering: It is a free assembly of individuals who come together to practice peace. The focal point of the Annual Gathering July 1-7 is a coming together in a large circle, each person praying silently in their own way for peace. Most of the regional gatherings also set aside a day for the Silent Circle. A Rainbow Gathering is not a party, although partying certainly happens. It is not just a big hippie campout, although there are lots of counter-culture and new-age types camping in the woods. It is not just the world's largest love-in/be-in/ smoke-in, although a lot of that certainly goes on. For me, without the element of prayer we might as well not gather at all. For me, without the element of the Circle in which we participate, we mights as well have a hippie convention at the Hilton. For me, without the practice of Peaceful Respect and continuing attempts to create harmonyamong each other and all beings of the Earth, me might as well give up any pretense that the human race is evolving.
So, does that make things more clear? You'll probably get as many different answers as you will people answering. Good luck sorting it all out. The annual Rainbow Gathering of the Tribes will take place in the Northwest next July - Oregon or Washington. Stay tuned for directions, which will probably come out about amonth before the gathering!
Love and Light,
Carla

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is Not an offical document of any kind by the Rainbow Family. This invitation is my own creation, and as such only represents my own ideas. In no way does this mean I or anyone else represents the Rainbow Family, regardless of what the Family wingnuts say.

i found this article today which can give a little history as you walk down alberta tomorrow:

The Alberta clown house

Pepto writes
"Ok, you jerks, ya wanna hear a story from Portland? Well
I got a tale that will turn your knuckles white and curdle yer blood Like well, like curdled blood (whatever the hell that is). The Alberta clown house is situated in NE Portland. It’s the home base and breeding ground for Portland’s own internationally renowned (we’ve been to New Mexico and our videos are big in Bogotá, Columbia) clownabilly rock band, named after me, Pepto Dizmal.

We are five brothers. I’m the most beautiful, then there’s Dingo the rodeo clown, Draino the dumpster diver, Neptune the greasy hippy, and Servo the punk (he’s adopted).

We used to live in North Portland, on Mississippi Ave.(back when it was rough) A few of us engaged in vigilante justice: us vs. the jerks who sold crack and beat up prostitutes in our yard. It worked like a charm; Police do their thing, and so do normal citizens, but nothing?
NOTHING scares a thief or crack dealer more than four clowns stalking them on girls’ bikes, and throwing painted bricks at them, while laughing hysterically."

We hit the underbelly of the Mississippi neighborhood like a gaggle of frozen rubber chickens (whatever the hell that is). The crack dealers’ union almost fell apart, as their representatives lobbied the C.I.A. for more funding and better training since none of the pimps and thugs were schooled in countering vigilante clown insurgents.(Ask the folks at Mississippi pizza, we used to rumble with thugs on their front porch)
Many a would be thief stopped the police in those North Portland streets, begging to be taken to jail just to get away from a drunken, naked clown (I get sexy when I drink).

Yes, the plan worked. People were coming out of their houses; enjoying the community, and more people, told people who told people who told people, and they all began loading their bikes on their cars(hahahahahaha) and moving into the neighborhood. Pretty soon, it was so safe that we could no longer afford to live in our clown house. Rents skyrocketed with the influx of Young Urban Professionals. A coffee shop sprung up, and then a video store with no videos, just little records that don’t play on the record player.

Friends of ours who had lived and worked there 40 years got swindled out of their building, and evicted. Our slumlord noticed the coffee shop, and the presence of people who wear ties, and decided not only to raise the rent but also to evict us.

Let me tell you freaks, I haven’t seen that much drama and grief since we clowns had to battle N.V.S. (that’s a gang of disgruntled, clown-hating baseball players. Their name sounds like the word “Envious” but it really stands for “Not Very Sportsmanlike”), on the streets of Eugene.

Our new house on Alberta street is bigger, better and I hear it’s more beautiful (I’ve never been there), and I don’t think we will have to worry about getting classed out for at least six months. Fancy buildings are going up all over, and the sidewalks are cluttered with that chain-link fencing that surrounds construction of condos and high rent shopping. It’s a funny irony that I hear all the new apartments are being built with large balconies to enjoy the very street life they are driving away. The moral of the story? If you like where you live, keep it ugly. Encourage litter and gang violence. I’m just too beautiful to be in a gangfight, so when I get out of jail, I’m going home looking like crap. I told Dingo to get me an old jockstrap to wear, and I’m only eating bacon here in the joint (weird that almost none of my kennelmates dig bacon, they must be Catholic), so by the time I get out I’m gonna have the most impressive set of ingrown-hairy man boobies in town. Oh by the way, in case your wondering why I’m in jail, the rumors about me aren’t true. I hear people are saying that I went back to the old hood and dispersed hundreds of little baggies containing crumbled macadamia nuts, to encourage the crack horde to return.

But the truth is, we were biking our stuff to the new location; I hadn’t even seen the joint yet. Dingo got exited about the new digs and yelled,”YEEEEE-EEE-HAW!” A nearby agent of the office of Homeland Insecurity misheard him, and thought it was me, yelling, Jiiiiiiiiiiiiiiihad! I still haven’t been charged, or seen a lawyer, but that’s ok. I’m lucky, some people will never even get to SEE Cuba, and they give me free electricity, straight from the tap. I did notice that the Mexicans here wear rimless sombreros and talk some messed up Spanish. Gotta go, I hear a jar-head coming.

Love ya when I’m drunk,

Pepto

You have likely seen it somewhere around town. On memorial day, in front of the Federal Building downtown, she started drawing the names of soldiers who had died in Iraq. They are drawn in chalk on the sidewalk. She has drawn almost everyday since. She has now drawn over 2,000 names covering 6 miles.

She is now on Alberta at about 15th. Weekday mornings she chalks from 7:15 - 8:15. On the Weekends from 11:00am - 5:00pm.

Last Thursday she will turn out to chalk. Not sure exact times, 6-7 maybe?

If you would like to help chalk just stop by and say hello.
So Long, Clowns
Alberta Clown House Packs it In
BY SCOTT MOORE

Part-vaudeville, part Burning Man, part bike repair shop, part hostel, and all-freak show, the Alberta Clown House has been an icon of North and Northeast Portland for years. But at the end of August, the assorted clowns and tall-bike riders will be packing up and moving on, victims of soaring property values.

A year ago, the owner of the property—at NE 25th and Alberta—raised the rent by $300 to $1,500 per month. The boss of the Clown House troupe, who goes by the name of Dingo Dizmal, says they spent their savings on the rent increase in order to stay another year. Now, though, they've decided it's time to move to a cheaper neighborhood.

"The people in this neighborhood have been really sweet," Dizmal says. "The neighborhood business association raised $575 for 'Alberta Clown House' T-shirts for us, but then we found out that more than half of that money came from businesses who just wanted to see us go."

And that's been the great contradiction of the Clown House as the surrounding neighborhood has transformed. They've been a staple of Alberta's Last Thursdays, and have arguably added to the events' crowds, but they've also come under fire for the drunken parties that inevitably end up there. A year and a half ago, the house was the target of complaints about "dead" bikes littering the yard.

But despite the debauchery that follows the clowns, and despite a handful of neighborhood complaints, the house's owner, Will Hardy—pastor of the Highland Christian Center on NE Glisan—says he's accommodated them because they represent Portland's "multifaceted diversity."

"They've been hard on the house, but that comes with the business," Hardy says. "Still, it's been a workable arrangement. They've really given Alberta Street an image."

Dizmal admits it might be difficult to find a new accommodating.

"It's hard to tell people what we want," he says. "We're a clown tribe; we're kind of loud; hot girls follow us wherever we go; we like to blow things up, and fix bikes in the yard. We're like Jesus, but without the good intentions."

alberta needs to be closed on last thursdays.

it's about getting a permit.
it can be done like: portland marathon, block parties and other events in the city where the barriers go up to close traffic

when i worked for friends of forest park we had to get a permit to close down some streets for our walk/run event.
it's mostly red tape, time and some money
the office is with the city of portland and is located close to PSU on sw 4th or something.

i don't have the deets bcause i wasn't the person who organized the permit aspect of the event.

so all that needs to happen is someone who has the time, gumption and demeanor to walk into a city permit office to get the information so all who care can move forward with this idea.

Check out Breakbeat's new album with collaborations w/ Bassnectar & more! (Great work Anthony!! xo astro)

BreakBeatBuddha (a.k.a. Anthony Traynor) has been producing and performing for 15 years. His DJ sets are a blend of Hip Hop, Break Beat and Drum n’ Bass to which he adds live conscious lyricism which challenges the dance floor and politicizes the party.

He sees his music as both a calling, to those who are involved in the struggle and as an answer to our spiritual needs; to dissolve the illusion of separateness and to rediscover our collective body.

He has been creating waves on the West Coast of the United States now for some time and is constantly touring throughout the country connecting cultural resisters every where to promote social change through creativity.

There is an urgency and a strength to his music which summons us to be as powerful as we can be, to be fully alive.

".....Gots me an album out, entitled: "MIND BOMBIN", available for download from www.addictech.com for the hi res fanatics out there and also on I-tunes and Beatport......check da flex."

Trevor was influenced by the Detroit and Chicago house sounds that were so vibrant in Portland in the mid to late 90's. After a couple of years of nodding his head to beat, spending the afternoons in Portland's StarBass Records and watching the likes of Kenny Larkin, Traxx, Mike Huckaby, Staci Pullen, Doc Martin and Mark Farina work the decks for hours; Trevor knew it was time to get some of own decks. In 2000, Trevor started with two tech 12's and vestax p170a. Trevor is currently a member of Abstract Earth Project and is living in Seattle working as DJ/Promoter during the night. Over the last couple of years, Trevor has played along side with Johnny Fiasco, Justin Martin, Jazzy Eyewear, Mike Grant, Boo Williams, Hipp-E, Scud Bloom, Troydon, Gene Hunt and Brett Johnson.

For Martin Fischer aka Sonny Chiba, music is a way of life. It’s been his first love, motivation, and muse since he conned the BMG music club at age 12. This love, combined with hard work, has taken Sonny Chiba many exciting places. Last year saw him headlining in Toronto and San Francisco, and this year his sights are set on Miami for the WMC. This expansion is fueled by the support of his hometown of Seattle, where he was voted the #1 most requested DJ in 2006 by the members of Nwtekno.org. It’s with this momentum that he continues his quest to conquer the music industry, bringing a new sound that combines a solid foundation of Breaks, with a tasty mix of Hip Hop and Funk, and adding just enough Rave to keep party rocking.
Subsidize // Stainless

From garage DJ to playing local house parties while attending college in Colorado. Ben Shelton developed his skills playing a unique mix of energy and hard house with a melodic twist. Ben moved back to Seattle in 2001 and quickly familiarized himself with the local underground. He got serious about performing and stepped up to the plate. Three years later, after an awe inspiring vacation to Ibiza, Ben experienced a massive change of scenery. House music. Shortly after, he and 3 other DJ's established Subsidize and showcased some of Seattle's best house talent at "Why Not Wednesdays" at Watertown. Whether rocking Seattle's finest night clubs, or annihilating a 3 day outdoor, you will always find Ben's filthy bass lines and bright eclectic melodies commanding you to dance harder.
Leschi Lounge // Dreemworld

Jen Woolfe began her DJ career in 2001, after realizing her favorite spot on the dance floor was 2 feet away from the DJ booth, watching the hands of every Deep and Tech House DJ that came to her hometown of Seattle. Soon after she picked up Deep Dish's Global Underground, she made the move to Progressive House, a genre that succumbs to her seductive style and intimate journeys.

Jen began to play for local clubs in early 2003. She also began promotions for events of her own, making a name for herself in both the club and party scene. In 2005, she teamed up with fellow musician Mel Sky to promote one of the most successful Afterhours monthlies Seattle has seen in recent years, the Leschi Lounge. At the same time, Jen returned to her Alt-Rock roots by fusing the dance and rock genres and tinting her style with elegant Electro.

Jen's versatility with genres allows her to play any time of night at any venue, so long as its House. Her desire to bring together diverse communities under one groove has helped her to be one of the most loved and devoted DJ's in the city. Jen has played at venues across the U.S., including San Francisco, Portland, Boston, Boise, and Black Rock City, NV. She currently hosts the night Rebirth at Seattle's Heavens nightclub the third Friday of every month.
Theory in Motion. The Seattle duo are breaking down the barriers and stigmas often associated with electronic music with their cosmic blend of pop, rock, classical, and electronica. They call it “psy-pop”, you will call it amazing!
Describing music as the first doorway to self realization, listeners instantly and irrevocably become aware of something greater than one's self. Theory in Motion's debut album "ARE YOU READY?" has been drawing comparisons to some of electronica's true heavyweights - Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, and The Crystal Method to name a few.

Never one's to rest on their laurels, Theory in Motion are currently in the final stages of post production on the follow up to "Are You Ready?" The album, "Wake Up" is tentatively scheduled to drop March 2007. The album will be available for purchase at www.myspace.com/theoryinmotion

In addition, Theory in Motion has created and produced the original score and soundtrack to the indie films "Omission" and "Digilis." The duo has licensed their music to a wide variety of corporations. Get the word out, Theory in Motion are putting the final touches on a summer 2007 tour with dates to be announced.

After watching the DJs battle in the movie Juice in 1992, he said to
himself, "I can do this." Sen¢e began working with local Portland
hip-hop artists in the mid-to-late 90's, and became more involved with the 'underground' movement. He soon bought himself a set of turntables and began to teach himself how to beat match and mix. By 1999, he attended his first 'rave' and grew to really love the family-oriented vibe that was associated with the scene. In 2000, he went into hiatus only to come back out two years later. With some much time on his hands, what better way to utilize that time than practice? It wasn't until the latter part of 2004 that Lance began to meet many promoters and DJs who were in love with music as he was. By 2005, Sen¢e began collaborating with local talents and even threw his first "party." Do not mistake this DJ as a one-style aficionado. His record collection reflects the versatility of his style and the uniqueness of his sounds. Creating music with records like Korean folk chants to Dr. Seuss' Turtle the Turtle interloped with some House or Trance, you can be certain of one thing -- he is one of a kind.

A time when there was a place and venue for amazing performers to come together in a gypsy caravan style and change the atmosphere of the town around them - reminding people there is another way of life and relieving people of their daily routines - reminding them of the power of magic and imagination. The roots of radical artistic movements of today are deeply intertwined with the carnival sideshows of the past…
We acknowledge our carnival sideshow roots to empower our communities with alluring, inventive, and fearless displays of imagination and dream! Our carnival sideshow not only provides a place for roving gypsy carnival performers and “human curiosities” to express their art but also provides an environment which revives and highlights the great performers and “freaks” of the past – and their true life stories! Using olde-tyme music, puppets, story telling as well as classic carnival sideshow acts and performance we create a world that taps into profound emotion, reminding the AUDIENCE of the actualization of the living dream. At the same time, this gives the “human curiosities” of the modern age a venue to be appreciated once again - this is our mission.
Our collaborative carnival art troupe is co-created with many fabulous idividuals - musicians, sideshow artists, clowns, writers, experts - each of which works on their routines, props, banners, and costumes in their locale. Each on its own is amazing, and together, we form our carnival ov dreams. We tour selectively, displaying our “History of the FREAKSHOW” museum installation, with a real life modern day freakshow and sideshow for our openings. With all ages kid-themed shows(dream shows) as well as adult-themed “nightmare” performances, our carnival sideshow does well at what we aim to do. We’re recreating the world one carnival at a time – awakening the collective subconscious.
The psyche is never laid so bear as when entering the world ov dream… Our demons and dreamers are assembled in an ever evolving Multi-Form Cabinet containing enough skeletons to squeeze the tears and fears ov even the coldest heart… For we all have dreams, and we all have nightmares… When we enter into the waking dream of beauty and art in life, we realize how real our dreams really are. Staring at our hands, we consider all that they can accomplish, for good or ill. We present our WAKING DREAMS and NIGHTMARES for your perusal… as an actual, real, living, modern day museum ov oddities style freakshow is paraded before your awe-inspired eyes! With a musical background ranging from Old-tyme gypsy jug band to eldritch accordion “eville” puppet madness… all this and more can become available for the entertainment and horror ov THE AUDIENCE, which has the opportunity to sign on the dotted line (in blood) and sell their soul for a glimpse into another world ov phantasmagoric dream!
www.wearecore.com
Among the founding suspension performers on Earth, up from Los Angeles and Houston for a visit to Cascadia.
"It is our intent to create original and physically demanding works of theatre by blending the practice of modern performance art with ancient rituals of body suspension.
We in CoRE have suspended our own concept of physical limitation, pierced the heart of our fears, and transcended the boundaries of social convention in order to further the understanding of the corporeal and spiritual being. Suspension acts combined with traditional performance art and theatre provide us with a new outlet for artistic expression that enables the audience to join us on our emotional journey. By pushing our own boundaries in life and art, we inspire others to explore their own."
A DICTIONARY OF BLOOD THEATER
"In a sense, there is no true, "real" theatre, only a black Cadillac crushing life and squeezing the heart out of us, one act at a time. It is appropriate then, that we cry, and mourn crushed lives, appropriate to watch as well as to perform. Why puppets? Because, by branch and root, from head to foot, there is not, nor art there be, anything so deep so sad so fun so thought-provoking so shamelessly despised so unrehearsed and prized as the beautiful blank darkness that descends upon you as the flesh is opened to let another story bleed forth.
The first installation of our new show Local man claims to have seen god but can't give an account of what he saw (Decipher that!) opens October 27 and runs throught the next two nights at the Someday lounge in Portland Oregon, moving to other venues down the west coast through October and November. This program deals with the erosion of sanity in the modern world. It is a puppetry program, including live actors and found objects, trash and treasures paraded before you eyes."
A Benefit for The Nightmare Collective

Indeed folks.

I'm performing tonight at a benefit for The Nightmare Collective. This is going to be a gigantic blow-out show, built around a touring group of electronic musicians and disaster relief workers known as SPAZ (Semi-Permanent Autonomous Zone). These are the expatriate Lords of the Oakland warehouse scene, the collective that birthed Nightmare Collective itself, as well as The SPAZ-Port, The Mutant Festival, Circo Mutante, and an absolute shit-ton of incredible music over the past decade. I don't know exactly what they've got in store for us, but past experience would indicate some combination of banging dance-floor experimental Live PA shit, some circus, and a light dose of more ethereal electro-acoustic material. Principally, what they have to offer is a party, but a party put on by hardline wandering art freaks. Also, they wander the Earth helping out at disaster sites such as New Orleans and Bali. Some of the greatest people alive.
http://www.spaz.org

Local acts will again include my own band, Nequaquam Vacuum, playing on the roof -- a post-asiatic free improvising ensemble combining my own scrap metal percussion and glossolalia vocals with the multi-instrumental meditations of Travis McAlister, psychedelic Indian classical noise from Brian Crowl on the sitar and jumbusch, the extended flute, recorder, and violin technique of self-taught maestro Dr. Yes, and some combination of our other revolving collaborators (maybe get James Davis out there, or Rale Sidebottom, you know, Nolon Ashley or something)

AND

here comes a big black cloud (astonishing trash rock with a theremin)
silver creme (colloidal or perhaps the variety of stage make-up)
the swimmers (screwy art-punk duo)

And Again,
the spaz mutate or die tour lineup

Featuring:
