Dogs at last Thursday

I just want to say that I am a lover of dogs and don't have issues with dogs. I do have some issue with some of their owners however. Last Thursday is not the best atmosphere for most dogs to be in. There are hundreds of people milling around, it's loud, it's chaotic, there's fire spinning around. Unless your dog is extremely socialized to large crowds or perhaps a circus performer then maybe it would be best to leave him/her home for this night. Your dog would probably be happier.

I have known many people who humanize their pets. Dogs aren't humans they are dogs. they follow dog codes of behavior. If you do not understand this you should not own a dog. You especially should not own a pitbull. ( I do not hate pitbulls, my x owned a pitbull which I lived with for 10 years until he died, the dog that is. I loved the dog but he was not a dog that was safe to take out in public. He was extremely aggressive to other animals, which is how pitbulls are specifically bred to be.)

Last night, not for the first time, I found myself in the middle of a dogfight on Alberta. The participating dogs were both pitbulls. One was on a leash and the other who was not on a leash jumped on him. The owner of the unleashed dog pulled his dog off the other and kept his dog on a leash for 5 maybe 10 minutes. Then he had a talk with his "little buddy" and told him that that other dog did not want to play and proceeded to unleash his pet. Many people asked him to leash his dog and he did not because he felt his dog was not a problem and was happier offleash. The same dog tried to go into my friends house up the street. She is afraid of dogs and I shoed the dog out of her house. The owner was nowhere in sight.

Sorry for my rant, but I'm sick of it.

My dog doesn't bite, he's vegan.

Dummy up, you hippy fuck, you own a dangerous animal. Treat him as such.

Just for the record, I do not have anything against hippies or vegans. I myself might be described by one or more of those terms. I just question hippy vegans who believe their dogs to also be hippy vegans.

Hear, Hear! What especially disturbs me is during the summer when it is obvious the dogs are miserable in the heat and damn thirsty. C'mon people, use an ounce of common sense.

I also am a dog person and have one who is much happier to stay home, rather then mill around the masses and get attacked by unleashed dogs that "just want to play."

Sorry for the harshness of my original post. I was really angry and did not have the opportunity to express it to the person I was angry at.

No need to apologize. First, I don't think it was too harsh. Second, it comes out of compassion for the dogs. They're just doing what comes naturally. It's the idiot owner that doesn't have a frickin' clue--and he's the one your vent was directed to. Rightfully so, I might add.

Pits can certainly be aggressive towards other animals, although they are very human-friendly. The real problems are

    1) People think leash laws apply to everyone else
    2) They don't know how to raise or train large dogs, especially big terriers, so that they will be well behaved in public.

equally unnerving are individuals who leash their dogs to a bike rack on last Thursday...and leave him or her there...all night...

It's even more distressing when this happens in the rain.

My dog ,a big friendly black lab, wouldn't make it one block down the street before he ate something I'd have to pry from his mouth, then he'd just start begging for food, someone might give him a cookie or brownie, he might start drinking Pabst , then I'd have to carry his 110 lb butt back home.
I had a friend bring his Beagle once last summer, he carried it mostly down the block and as the crowds got ever larger he gave up.

which is more common on Hawthorn than on Alberta, is having to dodge IPE (improvised poop devices) on the sidewalk. Obviously more an owner than a dog problem.

If you're going to bring a dog out in public, PICK UP AFTER IT.
