Anyone see what went down? Was it really Last Thursday people, or unconnected neighborhood folk?

i wonder what you mean by "neighborhood folk." people who actually live on and around alberta, rather than just coming in that one night to stroll and drink and maybe even fight, are intimately connected to and affected by Last Thursday.

I was there. Mob shmob. I was there from the start, we started dancing to a dj on the side of the street, about ten of us, more and more came until we were taking up a full lane, then we simply started dancing in the full street. It was very memorable and VERY magical, it was a dream in some senses for me, a community dancing in the streets. Reminded me why I moved to PDX. The vibe was great and I was very pleased. Then some more anarchist folks started these chants "whose streets?" "OUR STREETS!!" whose streets? our streets It was fun and fine, and I stayed while it got bigger and bigger. Soon there were maybe 200 people there. I wasn't a fan of the chanting, I wanted to say "just dance guys, just dance, thats why we took the streets, to dance, not as an act of defiance" I guess it meant different things to different people.

But I was still so pleased in the outcome--that we were dancing in the streets--that we stayed and danced for a good hour and a half. Soon the chanting got to me and we left to go to spincycle. As I biked away I met a friend who had seen the fight on 18th street, I kept biking and saw 50 cops in riot gear. I asked what had happened and several of them said 400 dancers surrounded the police and threw bottles at them. I tried to explain that it was two separate incidents--one nice dancers and the other a fight with 15-20 people who threw bottles. But they liked their version better than mine. The story got twisted around, like telephone, but it sounds better with 400 people against two cops than 15.

Too bad, I just hope there aren't tons of cops next thursday watching for dance parties and breaking them up before they get 'unruely'

thanks for the update.... i was out of town on work and when i watched "fox's" version of what happened.... i was fairly sure they were spinning something into a bigger thing than it was.... and yes lets hope they dont increase to police presence!

This is so completely normal for Last Thursday on a nice night!! It's a veritable alternative living convention in the neighborhood once a month (and only slightly less so the rest of the time.) I've lived in the neighborhood for 6 years now and absolutely LOVE how Last Thursday has grown and expanded. I love seeing so much joy and happiness in the streets and wish it happened every week!!

Hell - maybe it's time to have a party outfront of my house!

Or maybe it's time to start seriously talking about shutting the street down to car traffice on Last Thursdays. That would be even better!!

How sad that they are linking a fight between two people to a dance party 6 blocks away. How sad that the police felt like they needed to go get riot gear. How sad that the media (KGW) doesn't include the longer explanation of why the 3rd person picked up the tazer (www.kgw.com/news-local/s...243f80.html).

This event is not "in jeopardy" but it might finally need a little more management!! See you all next month!

Has there not been conversation, prior to this, about closing the street down? Because every time I do Last Thursday, either I or one of my companions brings it up.

I know that it would mean rerouting a busline for 6 hours once a month, but I wonder what greater benefit in terms of safety and sanity could be gained. In addition, they could post it "no parking 4-midnite Last Thursdays" and the city could earn some money towing ;-)

Spicey (Albert) was talking about it last year. I think it would be cool to do June/July/August like that. Those are the month's it's REALLY packed. Maybe May as well.

Not sure how to go about doing this though and I certainly don't have time to push the idea. I'd fully support it though!

Is "neighborhood folk" a pejorative? ;) IMHO, there are plenty of people who have lived in that neighborhood for decades but have nothing to do with Last Thursday. I was just curious who was involved.
